Your Take: What Project Have You Been Putting Off?

Home Depot Dream Gift CardI normally am not a fan of gift cards because they force you to spend them at a particular store, I instead think that cash can still be a classy gift if presented in the right way (and who doesn’t like cash?). However, if I were to get a gift card, there are few stores I’d rather get a card for than Home Depot because, like all other homeowners, I seem to be one project away from being “finished.” There’s always something I can get there and Home Depot doesn’t play any of the BS gift card games like devaluing the card if you don’t use it or charging annual fees.

From now until February 28th, The Home Depot is offering a special commemorative “Dream” gift card to celebrate and support the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Home Depot will donate 5% of each “Dream” gift card to support the Center for Civil and Human Rights, up to $1 million dollars. The monies will then be used to build a permanent home for Dr. Martin Luther King’s history papers, a collection of over 10,000 items consisting of his personal writings and papers. The collection includes over 7,000 handwritten notes from 1946 to 1968 and include drafts of his “I Have a Dream” speech, his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” other theological writings and his Nobel Peace Prize addresses.

You can buy these cards at a store or online at Home Depot (here are some Home Depot coupons you can use).

To help get the word out, Home Depot is giving Bargaineering readers an opportunity to win a $50 gift card! To win, all you have to do is leave a comment telling us what is the one project in your house that you keep putting off? You all know what I mean, it’s the toilet with the leaky tank, the door that doesn’t close all the way, the faucet that continually drips. What is the one project you keep putting off? For me, it’s my closet door that doesn’t close all the way. My closet won’t close because it’s just too big. I’ve sanded it a little but I need to get the electric sander out and really go to town before the stupid thing will close. I haven’t done it yet because my office is carpeted and I just don’t want to deal with both sanding and cleaning up. :)

So, what project have you been putting off? Tell us all by noon on February 13th and you will be in the running. I will randomly select one commenter to receive the $50 Home Depot “Dream” gift card. Void where prohibited. Good luck!

The contest is now closed, the lucky winner is “tom rundel” (Comment ID 296068) who just put in a wood stove, I hope this $50 gift card from Home Depot can help complete the look!

I have been putting off organizing the garage. Everything is everywhere and I need to get the right containers, etc but it just seems like too big a task so everything just sits! Shame on me.

  2. MP says:

Clean out my garage and get some shelving units/containers in! I am in the south and just got my boards cut for next year’s hurricane season which has made our garage even more cluttered! Got one shelivng unit put in last year and it helped us start organizing a number of items! But I need to go ahead and buy a couple more but right now I can find far better uses for my money in this economy.

    Thanks.

  3. Jessica says:

Believe it or not, building a wig. I buy a fair number of the supplies at Home Depot, like caulk and foam. I wrecked my felting board and need to make a new one!

  4. Baba says:

At the moment we are remodeling the Stone House so everything is in need of repair. Plumbing, Electrical, Dry Wall, Paint. You name it. So this would really come in handy for me. I would like to be able to move in by this fall, but we’ll see.

Mine is pretty simple…Need to replace the our main door stopper…This thing wobbles and shakes more than a hip hop video background dancer!

  6. Erin Walsh says:

Painting the trim. Of course it’s now been about three years scince we painted the walls. So the trim might actualy wait for the next wall painting project.

  7. Megan says:

Painting – my house has just got the builder grade paint and I have little handprints everywhere.

  8. Susan says:

The project that we keep putting off is putting up shelving and organizers in our master bedroom closet. As with many homes, we have left the master bedroom projects as the very last thing when we have little energy, motivation and budget to continue.

  9. Carolyn G says:

Mine is painting. When we moved into our new house the previous owners probably thinking they were doing a good thing decided to touch up the paint in several rooms. Well you can see the touch ups and it looks awful. I know I should have repainted immediately but we didn’t and now every week goes by and I still haven’t done it.

  10. Never ending, organizing the garage

  11. Karin A says:

Finishing the painting as well as the storage closet in the utility room–

  12. Jackie says:

We have been putting off redoing our bathroom…

  13. Adam says:

    Painting 3 rooms…

  14. Carol says:

    Um, which project to choose?
Probably putting the new bi-fold panelled doors onto the old bi-fold louvered doors track. I’m putting it off, basically because I don’t know how to do it! Good reason, I think!

  15. GGutierrez says:

I have been putting off creating a concrete form/stop under my double gate, currently the wind catches it and it bangs back and forth, I tried rocks and othe rslight barricades, but I’m going to have to break down and actully create a long term solution before my double gate is ruined.

It wasn’t pressing until our windy season started…and won’t end until June or July, gotta love AZ.

  16. stacey dempsey says:

i need to renovate my bathroom i shoudl get to it soon but have been putting it off, maybe if i won this it would inspire me to get started

  17. Mike W says:

Need to unclutter the garage and some new shelves would be great

  18. Christine says:

Putting up shelves in our house, framing some art, and buying supplies for the bf’s beer making hobby.

  19. Katherine T. says:

I have been putting off stripping the wallpaper in my kitchen (that my cat has been shredding for years) and repainting. Somehow, everytime I’m ready to get started I think of what a pain it will be to strip the wallpaper, and I keep putting it off!

  20. cs says:

I have been putting off getting a new railing installed or built for the front porch.

  21. Carrie says:

Painting. I have lived here 5 years and have a new closet door that is primed white but has not been painted and I should do the entire hallway and dining room but haven’t found the motivation to do so yet.

  22. Patrick says:

Thanks Jim for this great contest. I recently moved to my townhouse and need to paint the entire house. The walls are a weird color and I have not gotten around to getting them painted. This gift card would really help move along that process :)

  23. Kate says:

Removing that wallpaper and repainting the bathroom!

  24. Juan says:

I’m a 25 year old guy with a pink bathroom. Yep, might be time to get to work on that one….

  25. Patrick says:

I had the same problem with one of my doors. Lay down a sheet of plastic under the door when you do the sanding and it makes clean up a snap. :)

My project? I need to paint the stairwell. We had our basement finished a couple years ago and the contractors banged up the stairwell… it still needs a fresh paint job.
