I love Costa Rica. I lived there for a few years and enjoyed visiting the volcanoes, beaches, waterfalls, and rainforest areas. The country is small, but packed with amazing things to see and enjoy.

Favorite has to be China before 1980 before the Boom. All hazy and historical, old. Such a place doesn't exist anymore. All vacations are my favorite, a Month vacation every year should be mandatory. Bicycling in Europe. Lingering in small hotels, trying your hand at shopping and cooking the local cuisine. Other favorites: Rent with captain & cook go Sailing Puget Sound & the San Juan islands, Washington. Sleeping on a boat in the moonlight, water quietly lapping the hull, like being in the womb. Later sailing the coast of Mexico, waking at sunrise surrounded by exuberant dolphin and hundreds more coming from every direction,as if to greet, leaping and diving beneath the bow, trailing irridescense at night. Watching whales with calves broach(leap&dive) just a few yards away. Later approaching land, white sandy beaches, anticipating. Coming ashore from the ocean, immediately you're a local, so different from flying in and renting a hotel room. We shop the Mercado for fresh local fish or lobster, to barbeque back on board, later a refreshing dive, wafting smell of barbeque, the setting sun, fine music, fine wine, boat gently swaying. Filling the senses. There is NOTHING as romantic, unforgettable, lifechanging.(Just leave me here!) Okay enough of that. Go pack.

I haven't taken too many vacations yet, but my favorite so far has to be to Puerto Rico. I stayed in a hotel on the eastern part of the island and got to experience some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and see one of the coolest sights I have seen in my life, a Bioluminescent lagoon.

I did a lot of traveling when I was in the military, but to be honest, my favorite trips are the ones I take around my own home state with my family. A lot of people tend to overlook the great vacation spots in their own backyard. Check out your own state's tourism web site and look for locations you may not even know about. I have found some really cool vacations spots that way, and sticking to home is cheaper!

My favorite place is Lake Powell in Utah. Growing up my family would take a week long vacation there every year at the end of the summer. We would get a houseboat and spend all week out on the lake. Sometimes enough friends would go that we had 2 or 3 houseboats.

It always marked the end of the Summer for us because school usually started the week we got back. It was a great memory growing up. If you ever have a chance to go, I highly recommend it.

One of my favorite vacations was the two weeks I spent in Turkey in 2007. Some of the most incredible (and diverse) scenery I've ever seen, very friendly people - one man went 5 blocks out of his way to help me find my way to the bus station - and delicious, inexpensive food. It was also one of the cheapest places I've visited - my Istanbul hotel, which served a free breakfast on a glorious rooftop terrace overlooking the Marmion Sea, was only around $50 a night. And it was the largest single room I've ever been in.

The Cappadocia area was incredibly scenic and filled with ancient history (imagine the wonder of walking through caves filled with drawings by the early Christians?), and my time spent in Fethiye, on the tranquil and beautiful Turkish Riviera, was one of the most scenic and relaxing stays I've ever had.

And nothing compares to Istanbul - rich in history, filled with scenic and ancient treasures, it is also wonderfully modern and stimulating. The Spice Market alone is worth a visit - any chef would go crazy while walking through this perfume-laden treasure house of rich-colored spices.

All in all, it was the best vacation ever - and certainly one of the most inexpensive!

(First of all, it's utterly hilarious to me that the contextual ad that was served up in the RSS feed with this post was for that new movie, "A Perfect Getaway," where couples on their honeymoons are murdered on a Hawaiian island or something. HAHA!)

In my short life, I've really only been on a few vacations. When I was little, my mother used to take me down to my grandparents' winter home in Sarasota, Florida. Whitest, prettiest beach I've ever seen! I've also been to Disneyland, but I wasn't highly impressed, actually (I hear Disneyworld is better... I hope so!)

In high school, I took a tour of the west coast of Italy and all of Sicily. That was great! My favorite part was Pompeii... but that's because I'm a dork who spent four years in high school studying Latin!

But my favorite vacation was probably going to Scotland with my mom while I was in college. It was very pretty, and I wish we could have spent a lot more time there. I liked it just as much as Italy, only it had the added bonus of being an English-speaking country! ;) As nice as Italy was, it was sometimes very stressful to try and communicate. In Scotland, I could just relax and giggle when guys with awesome Scottish accents hit on me... *grin*

Depends. If I want to relax and enjoy sunshine, Maui. If I want urban adventure, New York City. If I want to lose myself in the British Museum, that would have to be London (duh), and if I want raw beauty and solitude, Newfoundland.

Tobago, a place where you can actually afford to go on vacation. Planning a Scotland trip right now and scratching my head thinking I could've gone to Trinidad and Tobago for way less than that, for way longer than that... and it would've been warm, with much better food.

It sounds cliche, but Disneyworld is hard to beat. It's the total vacation package, built from the ground up as vacation heaven, and beaches not too far away. (Of course the fact that I have kids is a contributing factor).

Just about anywhere on the California coast is near the top of the list as well. That combination of ocean and mountains, quaint towns and endless beaches, wow...

Ireland & England. I have been there several times, starting from the time I was 9 months old, because my mother was born & raised in Ireland and has family there. The best trip was in 1991. I went to London for a couple weeks for a cousin's wedding. One of my other cousins & I decided to go to France. We took the bus to Dover, got ferried over to Calais, and then went to Paris (traveling overnight on the bus). We got to Paris at 6:00 a.m. and saw the sights for the day. It was fabulous! That evening we got back on the bus and went back to London. I have been back to England since, but not to France. I would like to go again, but for a few days this time, not just one!
